About our Club - Author-Bill Stolberg Our club was formed in 1974 under the name of the Gympie Branch of the Australian Field and Game Association. Our first shoot was held on the old small bore shooting grounds near the Victory hotel. The trap was a hand operated unit placed in an old ships water tank cut in half. Later that year we clearing the site of our present grounds and a large amount of timber was produced most was sold to the local sawmill for $1100 giving our club a great financial start. Some of the timber was retained by our club to build our first office and a storeroom that is still used to this day. Our first Down The Line layout was built by volunteers from our club and used for the first time at Easter 1975.Our club affiliated with A.C.T.A in 1976.The ladies cooking was carried out in an old marquee tent that was erected at each shoot and the cooking had to be done on a couple of primus stoves sitting on two boxes. Some years later the main section of our present clubhouse was purchased for the princely sum of $1. It was originally a school room at Cootharaba Lake and was shifted to Pomona in 1941. The purchase was organised by Max Hodges who at the time was Queensland Police Minister and a club patron. In those early days large attendances were the order of the day with 70 plus at our annual shoots and we would see 40 plus at our monthly shoots. Initial power at our complex was provided by a small generator until some time later our club purchased a larger 30 kva generator that was driven by a V8 Cadillac car engine which was the back up power for the Olympia picture theatre in Gympie. The generator was our only power source for many years but the V8 engine was very cantankerous and only Tom Alford one of our elderly members a mechanic was the only person to tame the V8 beast. As you will see whenever you visit our complex today it has come a long way since 1974 manly due to the enthusiasm and hard work of past and present members.
